Comprehensive life science product development

New product development at WPT

At WPT, we turn an idea into a ready, safe product – from the first concept, through research and prototypes, to pilot production, quality documentation and preparation for scaling. We work in HACCP and GHP/GMP standards, providing access to the technology line, supercritical CO₂ extraction and the R&D laboratory.

What does the product development process look like?

1. Idea

Generating new product ideas or improving existing ones. This is the creative stage where concepts are shaped in response to market and customer needs.

2. Concept

Defining the product’s goals, functions and user benefits. At this step, an outline strategy and plan are created to turn the idea into concrete actions.

3. Design

Developing detailed product plans and specifications. This is when formulations, prototypes and initial visualisations are created, enabling assessment of feasibility.

4. Testing

Testing verifies the product’s safety, functionality and quality.

5. Advisory

Advisory support in preparing the required documentation and in planning and optimising subsequent product versions, followed by the launch of sales and distribution. The product reaches customers and its performance is monitored to support further optimisation and future iterations or extensions.

Product development lifecycle stages

Idea generation

Every innovative product starts with an inspiring idea. At this stage, concepts are generated through brainstorming, trend analysis and market needs assessment. Next comes idea selection, initial assumptions and business analysis. This is a stage of exploration – experimenting with ideas and identifying the best direction. Not every idea has to be perfect at first – letting a concept mature is a natural part of building a valuable product.

Development and testing

After ideation, it is time to validate the concept in practice. An initial version of the product is created to verify technological and user assumptions. Prototype testing helps identify potential challenges, risks and errors before the product reaches customers. This is a stage of intensive collaboration between technology and quality teams, where the concept becomes a tangible solution.

Product design

This is the phase where the idea takes shape – literally and figuratively. Design includes creating detailed formulations, process plans, technical documentation and visual materials. The process is iterative – each cycle of testing and analysis leads to improvements. The goal is to refine the product so it meets quality, technological and business requirements.

Market testing and business analysis

Once the product is finalised, it is time to validate it in real-world conditions. A selected group of users tests the product, and feedback is used to refine functionality, taste, formula or packaging. The aim of market testing is to understand how the product performs in practice and what responses it triggers. Business analysis then assesses profitability and scaling potential.

Market testing does not need to cover the entire market at once – local or time-limited pilots often provide robust data for investment decisions.

Commercialisation

The final stage is full implementation and market entry. It includes developing the required quality and technology documentation and scaling production. At this point, the product becomes available to customers and brand awareness-building begins.
